Zen and the Pen: Finding Your Inner Scribe

A meditative, motivational and informative session to take the stress out of self-expression and let your writing flow. This workshop creates an environment for you to relax and rid yourself of writer’s block!

Presenter: Linda L. Jones, ManeLock Communications, Dallas, Texas

Linda Jones is owner of ManeLock Communications, a professional writing and media consulting service. She is an award-winning journalist and author of "Nappyisms: Affirmations for Nappy-Headed People and Wannabes!” and founder A Nappy Hair Affair which promotes African American culture and identity.

Linda uses humor and “hair issues” in her writing as a way of raising cultural awareness and boosting self-esteem. Her essay, “Birth of A Nappy Hair Affair,” appears in the recently released “Chicken Soup for the African-American Woman’s Soul.” Linda is based in Dallas, TX.

The Music of Film

Today, more than ever, music fulfills a vital role in feature films, documentaries, and television shows. And on the flip side, film and digital video play an important part in music videos. This workshop will discuss the legalities of music for film, securing releases for use of soundtracks, working with independent musicians, supervising music for film and television.

Marvin Arrington, Jr. heads the Arrington Law Firm. He is an attorney with experience in employment, personal injury, entertainment, estate planning, corporate formation, litigation and alternative dispute resolution. The firm also represent motion picture producers in the acquisition and production of music for film, television and video programs. Arrington, was executive producer and music supervisor of Big Ain't Bad (feature film), music supervisor for Trois (feature), and founder of MultiMediaWeek and Urban Film Review, a national monthly film screening series.

Post-Production: It's All About Your Editor

Many people think once you have written your script and shot your movie, the hard part is then over for your film. Well, it is and it isn't. Yes, once you have the footage shot, the production is done, but the work has just begun for the film editor.

An editor for film, television or video must know how to tell a story. Working with the director, the film editor shapes each scene of footage into its final form. As a director/producer, you must understand that in post-production, it's all about your editor. This workshop will discuss building and maintaining a great relationship with your editor, and how to get the most out of your editing hours.

Monique Woods aka Redheaddread, Editor — A Howard University graduate, Monique began her professional career at CBS network television, soon after accepting a position with ESPN-Classic Sports Network where she began studying video editing and digital videography. The artist community of New York City allowed her the perfect forum, both technically and creatively, to tweak her craft. After working with the likes of R&B songstress Alicia Keys and rap impresarios WuTang Clan, she went international where she toured Italy, filming jazz legend Max Roach.
