UMFF 2006 Workshops - Saturday, October 14, 2006Basic Film FinancingSaturday, October 14, 2006 - 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Lenox Room Since the first audience watched a motion picture flicker on a screen in 1895, the art of filmmaking has exploded into a megaplex of ideas and images that have entertained audiences for the past 110 years. Over the years, film financing has become one the most complex investments. Though it is easier for the Hollywood directors in the world to land financing deals, there are viable avenues for independent filmmakers to secure financing. You are an independent filmmaker and an artist, not an entertainment lawyer or a business mogul, but do you understand the basic of independent film financing? For instance, do you know the difference between an active investor and a passive investor? Do you know what the initials "LLC" stand for? (Answer: limited liability company.) Do you know that if you try to solicit a large group of investors without notifying the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) you are probably violating federal securities regulations? The UMFF 2006 Basic Film Financing workshop will present the different ways in which films get financed. This session is designed for those who are new to film financing and will include an explanation of basic film financing structures and terminology. Presenter: Brian B.
